Founded in 1982, Breeders’ Cup Limited operates an annual series of horse races known as the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. Founded in 1982, the Breeders’ Cup was the brainchild of thoroughbred owner and breeder, John R. Gaines. The Championship races began in 1984. Grade I thoroughbred horses race each year over two days, although from 1984 to 2006, the event was held over one day.

Location

The location of the Breeders’ Cup changes every year, although every year except one it was held at tracks in the United States. In 1996, it was held at Woodbine Racetrack in Canada. Horses come from all over the world, especially the United States and Europe for the event. Attendance at the Championship is fifth place in North America.

Races

The Breeders’ Cup is a thoroughbred horse racing event. There are a total of 14 races run over two days. The details of each race differ in terms of weight, qualification and distance. The latest three races which were added in 2008 are a Turf Sprint, Juvenile Filly Turf and a Marathon. Prize money also differs between the different races, but generally ranges between $500,000 and $5 million. Each race presents to the winner a garland of flowers which is put over the horse and four Breeders’ Cup trophies.

The Breeders’ Cup Classic

The Breeders’ Cup Classic is part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championship. It is a Grade I Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race. It is run for 3 year olds and older over a distance of 2012m (1 1/4 miles).
